This weekend, spend your Sunday exploring the rich and varied history of fashion photography! The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s most fashionable exhibit, Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography, is now on display. Don’t miss it before it closes to the public after September 22nd!

Icons of Style showcases a diverse view of fashion and fashion photography—from elegant portraits made in the early 20th century to the trendsetting fashions of Beyoncé, David Bowie, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Jones, Run-DMC, Selena, and Solange; to images that have graced Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Ebony, and Essence.

More than 200 photographs by famous practitioners and lesser-known, yet influential artists present a broad perspective on fashion photography and its trajectory from a niche industry to a powerful cultural force. The exhibition surveys the gradual recognition of fashion photography as an art form.

Not only does the exhibit chronicle trends in fashion over the past century, but it also reflects broader cultural shifts. From aristocrats to street style, to supermodels and globalism, fashion photography often defines the ways people see themselves. Icons of Style brings together local, national, and international loans, augmented with works from the MFAH collections.

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is among the 10 largest art museums in the United States, with an encyclopedic collection of more than 65,000 works of art. The main campus comprises the Audrey Jones Beck Building; the Caroline Wiess Law Building; the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden; the Glassell School of Art; The Brown Foundation, Inc. Plaza; and the BBVA Compass Roof Garden. The MFAH has two cafés, a repertory cinema, two libraries, and two nearby house museums for decorative arts: Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, and Rienzi.

Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography is free with museum admission. Regular-priced admission ranges from $10 to $17 for non-members. For more information about the museum and its exhibits, please visit www.mfah.org.
