Approximately 50 percent of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions, most having to do with weight loss, improving finances, or getting a new job. Less than 10 percent, however, successfully achieve the goals they set for themselves. Of course, there are a number of reasons this can happen, and we’re here to cover 3 of the top mistakes you can make that will sabotage the success of your New Year’s resolutions. Take a gander:

Mistake #1: Giving Up Too Quickly.

First thing is first, you do not have to be perfect! Remember, this was never part of the New Year’s resolution deal. Falling off the wagon is never an excuse to abandon the entire endeavor. Change takes time, and like anything worthwhile, you’ll need to give yourself some space to adjust. Think of it as regaining a new type of muscle memory, and do what you can to remind yourself of the new behavior. Soon enough, it becomes your new normal, and you won’t have to think about it so consciously.

Mistake #2: Failing to Obtain Social Support or Identifying Healthy Role Models.

Believing in your ability to do the things necessary for change is critical to your success. The key to establishing this type of rapport is through various types of social support (i.e., role models) that will guide you along the right path. For example, Weight Watchers is one of the more effective weight loss programs because people meet regularly in a group setting where they receive inspiration and encouragement from others and publicly track progress towards their goals. See what we mean?

Mistake #3: Sabotaging Success with Environmental or Emotional Issues.

You can boost your willpower by avoiding situations and people that trigger the behavior you want to change. Switch up your routine before and after work, implement a better nightly routine, or rid your apartment home of any items that may compromise your journey. Some people are also unsuccessful in their efforts because they need to address the emotional or psychological issues that drive their unhealthy behavior. A good counselor can help you overcome any barriers on the road to change!
